Concerned Women for America Responds to Federal Judge's Ruling on Plan B
WASHINGTON, D.C. - A federal judge has ruled that Plan B, commonly known as the "morning after pill," be available over the counter for all ages. Penny Nance, CEO and President of Concerned Women for America (CWA), responds:
"Even HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius saw the dangers of this logic. Since when have we placed politics over the health and well-being of our kids? This harmful ruling should be appealed, and we are confident it will be overturned.
"Plan B contains 40 times the dosage of Levonorgestrel, the same drug used in other forms of birth control. Yes, 40 times the dose. Our young girls do not need to be part of this 'social experiment' on their bodies in the name of politics. It makes no sense that kids need parental permission to take aspirin at school but they're free to take and buy Plan B. We call on the FDA to appeal the ruling and we are confident it will be overturned."
Dr. Janice Shaw Crouse, Director and Senior Fellow of CWA's Beverly LaHaye Institute, commented:
"Once again, those who yell the loudest about caring about the nation's children and youth are using our kids in a special interest experiment. Plan B, popularly called the "morning-after pill" is a much-higher-dosage version of the regular birth control pill (which used to require a doctor's prescription and continued doctor's supervision). It is irresponsible to advocate over-the-counter use of these high-potency drugs, which would make them available to anyone - including those predators who exploit young girls.
"This is a political decision, made by those who stand to profit financially from an action that puts ideology ahead of the nation's girls and young women. Where is the scientific data and solid reasoning behind a decision that endangers minors?
"In the U.S., out-of-wedlock pregnancies are driven today by the twenty-somethings and thirty-somethings, not teens. As usual, the reproductive rights activists are ignoring both research and reality in order to mainstream their ideology. Sadly, some of our children and young girls will suffer the consequences of this irresponsible decision."
