WASHINGTON, D.C. – Concerned Women for America applauds the House of Representatives for passing lifesaving amendments to H.R. 1298. These amendments fulfill the President’s requests that U.S. funding promote the Ugandan model for AIDS prevention.
“Today, members had a choice between the Uganda model and the San Francisco model of AIDS prevention,” said Michael Schwartz, vice president for government relations at Concerned Women for America. “The House chose to send life, not death, to Africa.”
The Pitts/Hyde Abstinence Amendment provides 33 percent of the funds set aside for HIV/AIDS prevention to go to abstinence-until-marriage programs. This ensures that the Uganda model will be implemented.
“We all know that the success of the Uganda model is based on its emphasis on abstinence and faithfulness in marriage. The President set the vision of this model in place in the State of the Union address;, this is truly a victory in achieving his goal,” Schwartz said.
Concerned Women for America also supported the passage of the Smith/Hyde Conscience Clause Amendment to protect faith-based groups from being forced to adopt any part of an AIDS prevention strategy that violates their beliefs or conscience. This ensures that faith-based service providers will not suffer discrimination.
