Statement of Concerned Women for America on the Passing of Pope John Paul II 4/2/2005 Washington, D.C. - Concerned Women for America (CWA) joins citizens of the world in mourning the loss of Pope John Paul II, who over the past 26 years has forged a historic papacy that has influenced not just the Catholic Church, but all of society.
Mrs. Beverly LaHaye, Founder and Chairman of CWA, said, “In terms of the goals of our organization, this Pope was a vital force on two different fronts: he was a peerless defender of life, marriage and the family and his leadership helped bring about the collapse of communism. His extraordinary leadership and his courageous stances have strengthened all of Christendom.”
Pope John Paul II was the first non-Italian pope in nearly 500 years and the youngest pope for over a century. He essentially redefined the papacy through his travels – making more than 100 foreign trips and thus becoming the most-traveled pope in history. But more importantly, through 14 encyclicals on social, theological and moral issues, he became a strong voice for Judeo-Christian values and had extraordinary influence both within and beyond the Catholic Church.
By any measure, Pope John Paul II has been one of the most significant leaders of the 20th century. Mrs. LaHaye added, “Pope John Paul II has consistently opposed the coarsening of culture and the culture of death; at the same time, he has consistently upheld the sanctity of life and the right to freedom. We take comfort in God’s promise of rest for the weary and His promise of honor to those of fearless courage.”
