CWA Says Left's Old Playbook is a Loser on Supreme Court Nominee     7/20/2005

Washington, D.C. – Concerned Women for America (CWA) responded today to the liberal criticism of John Roberts, a fine Supreme Court nominee, which began within moments of President Bush’s announcement, saying that the Left’s old Playbook won’t work in denying him the confirmation he deserves.

“By all accounts, John Roberts is a highly qualified nominee who has earned the respect of David Boies, the lawyer who represented Al Gore, and mainstream liberals like Sen. Joe Lieberman (D-Connecticut),” said CWA’s Chief Counsel Jan LaRue. “But that hasn’t stopped Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-New York) from dancing to the tune of his liberal handlers along with many other liberals making unfair, partisan demands.”

“What is it about John Roberts that the liberals don’t like?” asked LaRue. “Is it his humility that grates on them? Maybe the Harvard degrees aren’t mainstream enough? The liberals just don’t get it. Their outrageous behavior is completely predictable. We’ve said all along that no matter who the president was to appoint, the liberals would use the ‘five Ds’: dismay, demand, distort, defame and delay. And, right on schedule, the liberals are doing it again.”

“The President made a brilliant choice in John Roberts. He simply doesn’t give the liberals much ammunition,” said LaRue. “I predict that the liberals are going to have a hard time defaming this nominee. But, they will try to distort and delay – just like they did to Miguel Estrada. Roberts, like Estrada, was a government attorney and his papers are not public. It would be unethical to release them. But, liberals don’t have a reputation for worrying about ethical niceties. They're going to demand the release of confidential memos that they have no right to have. And then they’ll say they have to delay because they don’t have enough information.”

“It’s a shame, but it worked on Estrada,” LaRue emphasized. “And they’re going to try it again. In the end Judge Roberts will be confirmed. But, it’s up to the left to tone down the rhetoric and decide they want to be a part of mainstream civil behavior again.”
