What do multiculturalism, anti-Christian bigotry, feminism, homosexuality, socialism and environmentalism have in common? Theyre being taught at colleges and universities throughout this country--but not merely as one political ideology, as the only ideology. If, as a college student, you agree with a liberal philosophy, youre considered brilliant. On the other hand, if you hold to so-called outdated conservative views, youre deemed unenlightened at best, stupid at worst.
President Abraham Lincoln said, The philosophy of the classroom today will be the philosophy of government tomorrow. History has confirmed the truth of these words. Just look at how the liberal thinking of the flower-children of the 1960s has infiltrated the school boards, the city halls and state capitols of today. But, then again, what is history? Isnt it constantly open to revision? Perhaps even Abraham Lincoln, traditionally known as the great emancipator, will soon be known as one of the heroes of the gay rights movement. After all, according to one University of Massachusetts professor, Lincoln did have numerous gay affairs.
This may seem absurd, but, unfortunately this example is not atypical. In fact, it is just a taste from the smorgasbord of modern college offerings. As liberalism becomes more deeply entrenched in our institutes of higher education, conservatism is what is more widely seen as absurd.
A student enrolled for the 1997 school year at Dartmouth has the choice of taking Adored, Admired, and Despised: Women in Pop Music and Music Video. At the University of Iowa, students can learn about Elvis as Anthology, and Emory University offers a course, entitled, The Look of the Perverse, an English literature class that examines the corrupt nature of such films as Basic Instinct.
The Young America Foundation conducts an annual survey of the course catalogs of fifty of the top colleges and universities in the United States. Its 1997 study revealed that frivolous courses that would not have merited attention in serious academic settings fifteen years ago are increasingly becoming the norm at institutes of higher learning across the country.
The study found that every Ivy League college with the exception of Princeton now offers more courses in womens studies than in economics. This is the case even at Harvard where 540 students were enrolled in economics and only 13 enrolled in so-called womens studies--so-called because, with classes such as Practicing Feminism: A Study of Activism, and The Social Construction of Gender, most womens studies programs are just a euphemism for radical feminist boot camp.
The Young America study also revealed that gay and lesbian studies--a field non-existent a decade ago-is an established program at more than fifty schools and boasts classes at hundreds more. The University of Minnesota offers a class entitled, Gay Men and Homophobia in American Culture, while Oberlin College gives students the opportunity to study Queer Acts, in which drag is encouraged, but not required.
Some of the other alarming findings of the study demonstrate that Marxism is still flourishing, environmentalism is a science, and Christianity is an object of attack.
Thats why Concerned Women for America is beginning to reach out to a younger generation. We believe its important that young men and women have a chance to see the world from a liberal and conservative perspective. If the 60s gave us the government of the 90s, what will the 90s provide the government of the 20s--that is, the 2020s? We will do our best to ensure its a brighter--not a dimmer--future.
