CWA Cheers Roberts' Character 9/12/2005 Washington, D.C. –– Concerned Women for America (CWA) applauds Supreme Court Chief Justice nominee Judge John Roberts’ display of outstanding character and integrity at today’s opening hearing, despite blatant partisan opposition.
Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-California) said the committee's job is to make sure Judge Roberts is right for the position, and then said to him, "You are brilliant, talented and well-qualified." Jan LaRue, CWA's chief counsel responded, "You would think that would get Roberts her aye vote but it won't. A pro-Roe couch potato would have a better chance of Feinstein's backing.”
In contrast, Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) described how a dignified nominee should act: “Decline to answer any question that you feel would compromise your ability to do your job. The vast majority of the Senate, I am convinced, will not punish you for doing so. Rather, I am convinced that the vast majority of the Senate will respect you for this decision because it will show you to be a person of great integrity and independence, unwilling to trade your ethics for a confirmation vote.”
"John Roberts evidenced both his class and his humility in his brief yet telling opening remarks,” commented Lanier Swann, Director of Government Relations. “In the few minutes Judge Roberts took to speak to the members of the committee, Americans and senators alike were offered a clear picture of the fair and even hand with which Roberts would rule as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. He stated without hesitation that jurists should apply and interpret the law, yet never seek to become legislators. This is the exact character we are seeking in our next Chief Justice: a man who respects the difference between the legislative and the judicial branches."
As Judge Roberts so candidly expressed, “I will decide every case based on the record, according to the rule of law, without fear or favor, to the best of my ability. And I will remember that it's my job to call balls and strikes and not to pitch or bat.”
