CWA: Judge Roberts is a Nominee Who Will Honor the Constitutional Freedom to Worship 9/13/2005 Washington, D.C. –– Concerned Women for America (CWA) commends Supreme Court Chief Justice nominee John Roberts on his commitment to safeguard the constitutional rights of American people to worship in this country.
“The freedom to worship was so fundamental to the Founders of America that they guaranteed it in the First Amendment added to the Constitution. The right of individuals to worship is essential to a free society, yet there will always be people attempting to strip it away, to substitute their opinions for a moral authority with which they disagree,” commented Wendy Wright, CWA’s Executive Vice President.
“Americans have watched in dismay as federal judges have been among the most hostile to the right to honor God. Judge John Roberts has shown a deep respect for the Constitution and in his personal and professional life exhibits the primary lesson that comes from religion—honoring a higher authority above one’s own desires, opinions or preference.”
As Judge Roberts expressed in Monday’s opening comments, “Judges and justices are servants of the law, not the other way around.” The American people can rest assured that Robert’s spirit of servanthood and dedication to the law—including the freedom to worship—will be evident in his leadership, if he is confirmed.
