CWA Says: Specter, So Far So Good! 9/14/2005 Washington, D.C. –– Concerned Women for America (CWA) appreciates the fair and orderly hearing that Sen. Arlen Specter (R-Pennsylvania) is enforcing for Supreme Court Chief Justice nominee John Roberts.
“I’ve been very tough on Sen. Specter and opposed him as chairman of the judiciary committee. But fairness requires me to applaud him for running a full and fair hearing as he promised to do,” said Jan LaRue, CWA’s chief counsel. “The Democrats keep demanding more information about Roberts, allegedly ‘because the American people have a right to know where he stands,’ yet when he tries to answer a question, they interrupt him and talk over him with snide comments. You’d think that people who want to learn something wouldn’t waste 75 percent of their time listening to themselves.
“Sen. Specter is reining them in because he knows it can’t be a fair hearing if it’s full of hot air from those who are mugging for cameras and playing to their political bases. And when Judge Roberts refuses to answer an inappropriate question, it’s because he recognizes a spitball when he sees it.
“When it comes time for the committee to vote, Chairman Specter’s promise of fairness should lead him to the inescapable conclusion that it couldn’t possibly be fair not to vote for this exceptionally qualified nominee,” LaRue concluded
