CWA Says Pledge Rulings Prove Need for Judge Roberts 9/14/2005 Washington, D.C.—Concerned Women for America (CWA) condemns the ongoing judicial activism that makes reciting the Pledge of Allegiance in public schools unconstitutional.
Judge Lawrence Karlton of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of California consented Wednesday to atheist Michael Newdow’s objection to the phrase “one nation under God.” Newdow claims that reciting the Pledge of Allegiance violates the constitutional rights of school children, including his grade-school daughter.
“If Americans need another example of what the battle over judicial nominations is all about, this ought to do it,” said Jan LaRue, CWA’s chief counsel. “The Seventh Circuit and the Fourth Circuit have upheld the Pledge against these preposterous Establishment Clause arguments. Today’s ruling is the ongoing fall-out from the nutty Ninth Circuit ruling in 2002. If anybody thinks Supreme Court nominee John Roberts would make a wacky ruling like this one, not to worry.”
