Washington, D.C. – Concerned Women for America (CWA) congratulates Supreme Court Chief Justice nominee John Roberts on receiving an approving vote from the Senate Judiciary Committee. Today’s vote followed a week of hearings in which Roberts proved himself to be a man who loves the law and is committed to upholding the Constitution.
Now that Judge Roberts has been approved by a 13-5 vote of the committee, his nomination goes to the Senate for debate.
“Judge Roberts deserves overwhelming bi-partisan confirmation by the Senate,” said Jan LaRue, CWA’s chief counsel. “Only those willing to jump off a political cliff by joining hands with the die-hard abortion, gay rights and environmental groups can be expected to oppose this supremely qualified nominee.”
President Bush has a second opportunity to appoint a nominee to fill the vacant seat of Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor. Bush has gained the trust of the American people by appointing an exceptional candidate in Roberts. Roberts laid the foundation for the next candidate by staying true to his role as a judge and refusing to make political promises in exchange for confirmation.
“The President should name the best-qualified and proven constitutionalist to replace O’Connor as soon as Judge Roberts is confirmed, regardless of sex, race or ethnicity,” LaRue concluded. “The American people will decide the consequences of partisan politicians trying to intimidate the President into surrendering his constitutional duty.”
