CWA Urges Lawmakers to Keep Parents Involved      2/16/2007

House to introduce bill on the Child Interstate Abortion Notification Act

Washington, D.C. — Congressmen have the opportunity to pass legislation that would ensure that parents are informed when their daughter is considering an abortion. The Child Interstate Abortion Notification Act (CIANA), H.R. 1063, introduced by Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Florida), would prevent adults from transporting minor girls across state lines to get an abortion in an effort to circumvent a state’s parental notification law.

Concerned Women for America (CWA) President Wendy Wright said, “Parental involvement in a young girl’s medical decisions is always important, but particularly so when the decision will have life-long consequences, such as is the case with abortion. While the pro-abortion movement would like us to believe that girls can escape abortion unscathed, the reality is that abortion inflicts emotional and physical trauma that will remain with the girl as long as she lives. A decision that significant requires the guidance of people who have the girl’s best interest at heart — not some stranger who would smuggle her across state lines under her parents’ radar.

“Democrat leadership has said that they would like to find common ground issues we can agree on. Encouraging parental involvement should be a bi-partisan effort that we hope will be reflected in the vote.

“CIANA would protect vulnerable young girls from ill-intentioned adults who stand to gain from circumventing the law. We applaud Rep. Ros-Lehtinen for her leadership in this vital bill that truly would offer a safeguard for parents and daughters alike. We urge Congress to pass CIANA quickly.”
