The Bull in the China Shop 9/6/2007 By Ken Ervin The official word from China — especially on the topic of global warming — should be more than a thinly veiled mass of hot air. If China was McDonalds, then its sign would read “300 million served.” But China isn’t serving hot, steamy hamburgers, it’s serving up a plate of cold death.
According to Reuters news service, China claims that it has used its one-child policy over the years to “avoid 300 million births” — code words for “abortion.” But China isn’t the big, bad, evil nation you think it is — despite the recent spate of recalls on China-produced goods and that nasty little story about toxic chemicals somehow finding their way into medicinal products and children’s pajamas.
No, the forced abortion of 300 million children, many in their second and third trimester, turned out to be for your benefit. That’s right. With all those children dead, you should now be able to breathe easier. Why? Because according to Su Wei, a senior Foreign Ministry official heading China’s delegation to the United Nations’ recent climate change talks in Vienna, by aborting 300 million babies — a number roughly the size of the U.S. population — China “averted 1.3 billion tons of carbon dioxide in 2005.”
How craven is that? The silver lining in 38 years of forced abortions and sterilizations is the fact that China’s brutal and murderous actions somehow decreased its carbon imprint and helped fight global warming? Give us a break. The official word from China — especially on the topic of global warming — should be more than a thinly veiled mass of hot air. The bull from China’s PR shop indeed.
