Man Slips RU-486 to Woman     12/3/2007
Charged with first-degree homicide

Washington, D.C. — A Wisconsin man has been criminally charged for slipping his girlfriend the abortion pill, RU-486, causing her twice to miscarry. Concerned Women for America (CWA) has warned that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) put women at risk by approving RU-486, a drug whose only purpose is to kill a human being, and abortionists are violating restrictions on controlling its use.

“The FDA requires RU-486 be taken by the patient under a doctor’s supervision. Authorities should investigate how this man obtained the abortion drug and criminally charge whoever supplied it as an accessory,” stated Wendy Wright, President of CWA.

According to the Associated Press:

Manishkumar Patel, 34, is charged with first-degree homicide of an unborn child and second-degree recklessly endangering safety. He’s also charged with placing foreign objects in edibles, possession with intent to deliver prescriptions, stalking, burglary, possession of burglary tools, and two counts of violating a restraining order.

The woman had a blood sample sent to a California lab for analysis after apparently suspecting she had been slipped the abortion pill also known as RU- 486. She approached the sheriff's department when it tested positive for the drug. Sheriff's investigators said the man admitted putting the drug in something the woman consumed without her knowledge.

In a legal challenge filed in 2002, CWA presented evidence that the FDA’s approval of RU-486 was illegal and put women at risk. CWA also pointed out that abortion clinics routinely violate the conditions put on administering the drug, heightening the risk to women, and asked the FDA to rescind its approval.

“This is even worse than we had imagined. We have warned that if the FDA approved over-the-counter access to the morning-after pill, it would be obtained by men and slipped to women without their knowledge. RU-486 is more dangerous than the morning-after pill. The FDA knows this and required it only be taken in medical clinics by women under 49 days pregnant — which would require a medical exam to determine. It appears that abortionists are handing out the drug to people other than patients, including men,” said Wright.
