Washington, D.C.—Concerned Women for America responded to the FDA’s decision to approve RU-486 with a press conference today in Washington, D.C. Senators, doctors, attorneys and post-abortive women joined Wendy Wright, Director of Communications, to state that RU-486 should not be approved, now or ever. Following is Wendy Wright’s statement:

RU-486 is dangerous to women. Unlike medicine, which heals, it has no purpose other than to kill a human life. After years of research, there are still too many questions left unanswered. There are no studies on the long-term effects on women and their future pregnancies. The answers we do have are disconcerting, such as one in one hundred women will require a D&C, that is, a surgical abortion. And there are too many sordid figures involved, from a manufacturer in China, to the people who conducted the trials in the U.S. covering up negative results.

No person or group who claims to care about women would subject women to RU-486, a drug that has only one purpose—to kill an unborn child.

RU-486 is not private or safe. It requires several doctor visits and the woman will deliver the child anywhere—at work, in a grocery store, at a day care center. She will see and handle her baby’s remains. She will have to take her baby’s body to be checked to make sure every piece came out. If a portion is left inside, she will get an infection that could be fatal.

This is gruesome—and it points out one big difference between surgical abortion and chemical abortion. The woman will feel more responsible for the death of her child. She will be the one taking the pills. She will handle the dead body. And she will suffer the devastating physical and psychological consequences.

Today we heard from Congressmen, doctors, attorneys, and from women who have suffered the effects of abortion. They gave compelling evidence of why the FDA should not have approved RU-486, and what we will be doing to protect women from this fatal drug.
