Will the Super Bowl be Family Friendly?     2/1/2008

Washington, D.C. — “We have high hopes that this year’s Super Bowl will be a family-friendly affair,” said Wendy Wright, President of Concerned Women for America (CWA). “Even though the networks are aggressively fighting the FCC’s attempts to keep the public airwaves a safe place for children, it would not make good business sense to upset the largest TV audience of the year by broadcasting another offense on the scale of Janet Jackson’s wardrobe malfunction.”

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) fined CBS for broadcasting the indecent exposure of Miss Jackson during the 2004 Super Bowl. CBS is challenging the penalty and the U.S. 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals is expected to render a decision at any time.

“The Super Bowl has become an American tradition where families gather each year to watch this exciting showdown. Television networks who make this possible should feel a great sense of pride and satisfaction in bringing Americans together. But abusing this privilege by bombarding families with obscenity destroys this good will. Regardless of what the Court rules, networks will harm themselves if they ignore the outcry from viewers to keep the game family friendly.” said Wright.
