A press conference, held at the National Press Club this week, unveils research titled The Taxpayer Costs of Divorce and Unwed Childbearing: First-Ever Estimates for the Nation and All 50 States, which concludes that, conservatively, $112 billion is spent each year at the federal, state and local level to deal with the consequences of divorce and unwed parenting. Family advocates have historically relied on 2 of 3 arguments for preserving and promoting traditional, two-parent, married households, those being religious and moral arguments and arguments based on the social costs of family breakdown. Now, thanks to meticulous research brought to us by the Institute for American Values, family advocates can now arm themselves with data on the economic costs as well. David Blankenhorn, president of the Institute for American Values, says this data has long been needed to drive home the issue to business leaders and lawmakers.
