You Just Can’t Make This Stuff Up     4/18/2008
By Brenda Zurita

Strange, but true, headlines from the culture war.

A Vegan Strip Club

Johnny Diablo opened the first vegan strip club in Portland, Oregon, and as an added bonus, it is smoke-free. An interview on kptv.com quotes Mr. Diablo as saying, “(It’s) vixens, not veal, and sizzle, not steak. We put the meat on the pole, not on the plate.”

Catchy slogan.

Mr. Diablo is quoted further as saying, “My very sole purpose in life is to save as many creatures from pain and suffering as possible.”

Commercially sexually exploited women are obviously the exception.

A report in The New York Times last month said the club is now up for sale. Who could have guessed that Portland’s strip club aficionados needed cancer sticks and animal flesh to enjoy the exploitation of women?

College field trip to the Chicken Ranch brothel

Eleven students, all women, from Randolph College in Lynchburg, Virginia, toured the Chicken Ranch brothel in Pahrump, Nevada, this month as part of their American Culture program.

In an article on the reviewjournal.com website, a sophomore at the college was quoted as saying, “People keep asking me if this has changed my opinion about prostitution. I’m not sure I had an opinion on prostitution.” A little while later on the tour she is quoted as saying, “It’s [prostitution] always seen so negatively, and to come to a place where it’s legal makes you wonder if it should be.”

According to the reviewjournal.com article, the eight-day tour in Nevada also took the students to the Hoover Dam, Central Christian Church, a wedding chapel, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s office, the Southern Nevada Water Authority, which is planning a project to pipe groundwater from Eastern Nevada to Las Vegas, and a meeting with ranchers concerned about the project. Oh, and they went backstage at the “Jubilee!” show at Bally’s. Did I mention this show is topless?

Too bad they couldn’t squeeze in a meeting at the local chapter of Sex Industry Survivors Anonymous. They might have learned that all that glitters in the commercial sex industry is fool’s gold.

Teens Now Trade Nude Photos Via Mobile Phones

FOXNews.com ran a story about teens sending nude pictures of themselves to others via their cell phones as part of dating behavior. Detective Brian Marvin of the Reynoldsburg police department in Ohio is quoted as saying, “I’ve seen everything from your basic striptease to sexual acts being performed.”

For a generation that is so tech savvy, it is astonishing that they do this. Are they hoping to receive national or international attention, or do they not realize that once a picture is sent it can end up anywhere? People are arrested everyday for distributing child pornography, which much of this is, even if they did it themselves.

If these pictures are posted on the Web, they are out there forever. Just ask Pamela Anderson, Tommy Lee and Paris Hilton.

What seemed like a good idea or a flirty act will be transformed with the click of the “send” button into an everlasting mistake that could come back to haunt you when you least expect it and probably when you will be most mortified by it.
