Show Me the Money 4/24/2008 Defund Planned Parenthood’s Billion Dollar Industry Washington, D.C. — Concerned Women for America (CWA) will join with Students for Life in a silent protest to bring attention to the issues surrounding the nation’s largest abortion provider. Planned Parenthood currently receives over $330 million annually from local, state and federal government. They are the top recipient of Title X funds, which provides federal funds for family planning services.
Allegations are swirling that Planned Parenthood may violate state laws by underreporting the cases of statutory rape. And that’s not all. Most recently, the former Vice President of Finance and Administration for the Los Angeles Planned Parenthood office has accused California Planned Parenthood of defrauding taxpayers of nearly $180 million. In Kansas, Planned Parenthood and abortion provider George Tiller are allegedly performing late-term abortions and forging documents. Undercover videos and audio have surfaced on such sites as YouTube, where Planned Parenthood providers guarantee that money received will go to perform abortions on minorities.
Wendy Wright, President of CWA, said, “Planned Parenthood has been mired in scandal since its inception and faces criminal charges now, yet it rakes in obscene amounts of money from the government. Taxpayers should not be forced to subsidize this controversial organization that is legitimately accused of racism.”
Planned Parenthood has doubled its “excess of revenue over expenses” from $56 million in 2005 to $112 million in 2006 while performing just under 290,000 abortions in 2006.
For the aforementioned reasons, Shari Rendall, CWA’s Director of Legislation and Public Policy, said, “Planned Parenthood should not receive federal funds while such serious allegations surround the organization. We urge Members of Congress to pass Rep. Mike Pence’s (R-Indiana) bill, Title X Abortion Provider Prohibition Act, to ‘prohibit family planning grants from being awarded to any entity that performs abortions, and for other purposes.’”
