Signature Goals Achieved In California!     4/24/2008
By Leslie Steddenbenz

We have exciting news out of California! The ProtectMarriage.com coalition, of which Concerned Women for America (CWA) of California is a part, will present over 1.1 million signatures to county registrars across the state this week. Additionally, Sarah's Law delivered 1.2 million signatures on April 18. Volunteers on both projects worked tirelessly to gather these signatures and endured great harassment by opponents while courageously pressing on to achieve their goals.

By gathering the required signatures, and doing the hard but rewarding work required of those living in a democracy, supporters of both petitions have effectively wrested control of the decision-making process from state activist judges and returned it to the people. Both measures will now be placed on the November ballot for a proper vote.

Penny Harrington, CWA of California's Director of Legislation, remarks, "Now the road to the ballot begins, and it will be incumbent upon our churches and their leadership to teach their congregations about the important role of marriage between a man and a woman for our children and our nation's future. Likewise, we must stress the importance of protecting our teens from predators and saving precious unborn lives."

Sarah's Law is an initiative that "will require that a physician notify a parent (or, in the case of an abusive parent, an adult family member, such as an Aunt or Grandparent, can be notified) at least 48 hours before performing an abortion on a minor girl under the age of 18."

The California Marriage Protection Act initiative would protect citizens from having "same-sex marriage" forced upon them by pro-homosexual activists.

Matt Barber, CWA's Policy Director for Cultural Issues, says, "Marriage and family are the bedrock institutions of civilization. In today's postmodern culture, radical secular humanists on the left are desperately attempting to redefine those institutions into oblivion. The people of California have spoken. They are courageously standing firm against the ridiculous, androgynous and oxymoronic notion of so-called 'same-sex marriage,' which new age extremists have forced into the modern lexicon."

CWA of California thanks all those who took part in this unprecedented effort. Mrs. Harrington states, "This is truly a grassroots victory for marriage and family. These campaigns have been bathed in prayer that has been answered by an outpouring of support from pastors, churches and concerned citizens across denominational lines."
