Day of Prayer for Marriage on June 17     6/6/2008
California voters to decide definition of marriage this November

California voters to decide definition of marriage this November

The four judges of the California Supreme Court who issued the now-infamous May 15th opinion in favor of same-sex "marriage" have opened the floodgates of legal chaos to further undermine marriage nationwide. People, including clergy and churches, who hold to the real definition of marriage, risk being sued or otherwise coerced into accommodating same-sex couples. The Court's judicial activism and outright disregard for the sanctity of marriage has quickly spilled over into other states.

New York's Democratic Governor David Paterson has ordered all New York state agencies to recognize same-sex "marriages" performed in other states or countries. Before the California decision, Massachusetts was the only state to impose same-sex "marriage." The California opinion poses a greater threat because non-residents can marry there whereas Massachusetts allows only residents to marry. That means, homosexual activists from your state can go to California, get "married" and then return home to attack your state's marriage laws.

All this is happening at the same time that pro-family Californians, including many Concerned Women for America (CWA) volunteers, have been working hard to put a marriage amendment on the fall ballot. On June 2, the state certified the California Marriage Amendment Act for the November ballot. Over 1.1 million Californians signed petitions to allow a vote on an amendment to define marriage as between one man and one woman. Clearly, the people want to vote. But, on June 4, the California Supreme Court refused a request to stay (delay) the implementation of its order until the voters can act. This means that residents and non-residents of California could begin "marrying" as early as 5:01 p.m. on June 16. And, non-residents will return to their home states to demand that their "marriages" be recognized and given "full faith and credit."

Concerned Women for America (CWA) is announcing a Day of Prayer and Fasting on June 17, the first full day of the new regime, to ask God's intervention in these attempts to radically redefine the institution of marriage.

Please pray for:

  1. Judges who will honor their oaths and the written state and federal Constitutions.
  2. This fall's referendum in California which will overturn the unjust Supreme Court decision by amending the state's Constitution.
  3. A renewal of faith in our nation; that we Americans will experience a new Great Awakening; that our nation will return to the Biblical values on which she was founded.
  4. Believers to be bold in speaking out in defense of marriage.
  5. Many hearts, especially the hearts of persons facing same-sex attractions, to be open to God's healing power and grace.

Phyllis Nemeth, CWA of California State Director, said, "Prayer is the key to this battle. We need to see hearts changed by God at the same time that we're trying to change minds. That's why I'm inviting my fellow Californians especially to join CWA in prayer and fasting for our state and our nation."

Wendy Wright, President of CWA, said, "CWA was founded on 'prayer and action'. The decision by the California court on same-sex marriage is an affront to God and His plan for marriage and family. It will cause long-term problems and risks for families, churches, agencies that work with children, and many others - leading to more lawsuits and damaged lives. While many will be working to protect the true definition and meaning of marriage, our first action must be to pray for God to intervene. Please join us in prayer and fasting on June 17.

America is at a crossroads, so please join us in this time of prayer and fasting. "If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land." (2 Chronicles 7:14)

Encourage your congregation, family and friends to join us in this effort. God bless you, and may God hear our cry and bless America.
