Crouse says WRAP up Porn and Throw it Out     10/22/2008

Washington, D.C. — White Ribbons Against Pornography (WRAP), the annual campaign to increase awareness of the harms of pornography, is October 26 through November 2. People are asked to indicate their opposition to pornography and obscenity by wearing or displaying a white ribbon.

Dr. Janice Shaw Crouse, Director and Senior Fellow of Concerned Women for America’s (CWA) Beverly LaHaye Institute, points out that there are nearly 35 million visits to porn sites every month from American computers –– some experts estimate that constitutes 1-in-4 Internet users. She said, “The pornography industry has exploded in recent years; they now produce more than 15,000 new adult titles every year –– with women and children depicted in increasingly degrading and debased ways.”

Crouse continued, “Since pornography is a $5 billion industry annually, it affects us all. It harms women and children, it destroys families, and it weakens communities. Our Constitution does not protect obscenity. It protects liberty, it protects our children and it protects public morality and safety. Only the naïve would think that porn is a private matter. It is especially a threat to children when 85 percent of prisoners convicted of possessing child pornography admit to abusing at least one child.”

Dr. Crouse is very concerned about the lack of public awareness and public apathy in the face of an increasingly coarse and corrupted society. She said, “One of our immediate challenges is to work against efforts to make sexual objects of so many of our women and sexualize so many of our children. Our women and children are not commercial sexual commodities. Where is the outrage?”
