Crouse Responds to “Narcissistic Sovereignty” Comment     11/25/2008
Americans are qualified to govern themselves

Washington, D.C. ––– Dr. Janice Shaw Crouse responded to criticisms of the United States which has wisely declined the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC). Encouraged by the prospects of an Obama Administration that would look favorably on the United Nations’ dangerous treaty, groups supporting its ratification held a press conference last week to renew their efforts. Crouse said, “The United States already has the best laws in the world for protecting the nation’s children. We don’t need the United Nations to tell us how to raise our kids.”

Crouse was responding specifically to Harold Cook, Fellow with the American Psychological Association and a non-governmental representative to the United Nations, who said that the U.S. decision not to sign the treaty is a matter of “narcissistic sovereignty.” Crouse added, “The left has long accused the U.S. of arrogance because we refuse to let international law trump U.S. laws or to take away the right of American parents to make decisions about raising and educating our own children. A treaty like the CRC would pit parents against their children by giving children the so-called ‘right’ to question their parents regarding decisions made in their home –– about discipline, education, religious instruction and other matters of worldview or faith.”

Crouse concluded, “We don’t need an international body of leftist ideologues usurping the sovereignty of our nation and invading the sanctity of our homes. The American people are fully qualified to govern themselves. They do not need the help of leftist ideologues who plan to force their radical, utopian ideas on American families and shove their radical agenda right into the privacy of our homes. As parents, we have the right to make the decisions about how our children will be raised and educated; we are not about to turn that right over to the United Nations.”
