Now is the Time to Act     12/3/2008
By Leslie Smith

"There is a time for all things, a time to preach and a time to pray, but those times have passed away. There is a time to fight, and that time has now come."-Peter Muhlenberg, from a sermon read at Woodstock, Virginia, January 1776

These words were uttered by a minister in Virginia as he addressed his congregation in the midst of the American Revolution. As John Peter Gabriel Muhlenberg stood at the pulpit that morning, he began reading from the third chapter of Ecclesiastes, "To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven…" As he concluded the eighth verse, "…A time of war, and a time of peace," Muhlenberg removed his clergy robes to reveal his Colonel's uniform underneath. The very next day he led 300 men from his county out to form the 8th Virginia Regiment of the Continental Army.

Appropriately, the image of Muhlenberg revealing his uniform, captured in stone, stands in the United States Capitol. The statue serves as a reminder to all Christians that it is our duty to fight and protect the rights and the freedoms that are granted by our Heavenly Father.

Since November 5, 2008, Concerned Women for America (CWA) has received countless calls, emails, and letters from men and women who were alarmed with the results of Election Day. All were shocked that so many pro-life measures were unsuccessful, and that social liberals now dominate our White House and our Congress.

Each of these citizens asked us, "What can I do?" Our answer to them is to join us in the fight!

"Our country is in danger, but not to be despaired of. Our enemies are numerous and powerful; but we have many friends, determining to be free, and heaven and earth will aid the resolution. On you depend the fortunes of America. You are to decide the important question, on which rest the happiness and liberty of millions yet unborn. Act worthy of yourselves." -Joseph Warren, Boston Massacre Oration, 1775

CWA was founded upon the belief that we, as followers of Christ, are called to stand up for Biblical principles and we, too, are dismayed when we view the present state of our nation. Though there are many Christian leaders in our country, there are many others whose goal it is to strip our laws, schools, and courthouses of any reference to the Judeo-Christian values on which our nation was founded. We now have leaders who do not value human life, religious liberties, or the freedom to act and speak according to our conscience.

"I knew, moments after the election results came in, that I was now part of the resistance movement," Wendy Wright, President of Concerned Women for America.

There are many issues of concern for the coming year. Our policy analysts predict that 2009 could be the most radical year of policy since the Clinton administration. President-elect Barack Obama has promised to sign in the Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA), which would eliminate any restrictions on abortion, and he vowed to appoint federal judges who would uphold Roe v. Wade. Obama also told "same-sex marriage" activists that he would overturn the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), effectively ignoring the will of the people who voted to protect traditional marriage.

This is just a small sample of issues about which we are concerned. To learn more, please download this fact card. Designed to produce four cards per page, these fact cards are ideal for passing along to interested friends and to keep on hand when engaged in a conversation.

Ultimately, our religious liberties, free speech, and the lives of million of unborn children are at stake.

"The sum of the whole matter is this, that our civilization cannot survive materially unless it be redeemed spiritually." ~Woodrow Wilson, "The Politics of Woodrow Wilson"

"America is no stronger than its people--and that means you and me. Well I believe in you, and I believe if we work together then one day we will say, 'We fought the good fight. We finished the race. We kept the faith.'" ~ President Ronald Reagan, National Rifle Association Convention, May 6, 1983.
