Washington, D.C. – Today Tom Daschle withdrew his nomination for Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) after his numerous ethical problems came to light. Concerned Women for America (CWA) calls on Barack Obama to take a breath in his rush to load up the government with political allies with troubling records.
Wendy Wright, President of Concerned Women for America, said, “Tom Daschle claims to be for one thing while actively doing the opposite. He voted for higher taxes, then was caught not paying taxes. He gave the impression to his South Dakota constituents that he was pro-life, yet he voted to fund abortionists and surreptitiously tried to undermine legislation to restrict abortion.
“In Barack Obama’s rush to overhaul our health care system into a government-run system that would take away people’s right to choose their own plans and doctors, he is loading up his administration with people with hard-core pro-abortion records. Many of Obama’s nominees and staff share Daschle’s troubling history of aggressively opposing pro-life measures that would save lives. Abortion kills children and damages women, yet many of Obama’s picks have fought any restrictions on abortion and seek to institute abortion into government-run and funded programs. If Obama is to live up to his promise of an ethical administration that represents all Americans, he needs to stop appointing people with out-of-the-mainstream records on abortion,” stated Wendy Wright, President of Concerned Women for America.
The National Abortion Rights Action League (NARAL) called Daschle one of the group’s number one supporters.
Former Senator Tom Daschle voted in favor of federal funding for abortions. In 2003, he voted to overturn the Mexico City Policy in order to allow funding for international abortion groups. He even voted to force taxpayers to fund abortions on military bases.
