Sebelius Record Conflicts With Senators’ Concerns     4/2/2009
Senators fail to make connection between their concerns and her poor record

Washington, D.C.—At a Senate hearing today on Kathleen Sebelius’ nomination for Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS), senators raised issues of concern but failed to connect them to her record. Concerned Women for America’s President Wendy Wright stated:

“Senators raised general issues of concern but failed to ask tough questions related to Sebelius’ own poor record on those issues. Several senators asked Sebelius about Medicaid and Medicare fraud and whether she would continue tough enforcement to recover funds. Yet a major recipient of HHS funding that stands accused by a former employee of one of its affiliates of bilking the government of $180 million is also a supporter and fundraiser for Gov. Sebelius. Planned Parenthood receives millions of dollars in federal funding from HHS. It faces criminal charges in Sebelius’ state of Kansas. Recent investigations caught Planned Parenthood employees on tape advising young girls to violate state laws. Will Kathleen Sebelius commit to aggressively investigate charges of fraud and corruption of one of her supporters?

Senators, concerned about drug safety, asked about the Food and Drug Administration’s oversight of drugs manufactured in other countries and imported to the U.S. But they did not ask about Sebelius’ veto of a bill to implement safety standards on abortion clinics after credible reports of filthy conditions in Kansas abortion clinics were discovered. Will Sebelius have the same low standard for health care for America’s women as she has women in Kansas?

At a time when Congress plans to expand the government’s role in America’s health care, we cannot afford to have Kathleen Sebelius—a person who denies basic safety standards for women’s health care and supports a group accused of massive fraud and criminal conduct—at the helm.”
