Crouse Decries Homeland Security Report on Rightwing Extremism 4/14/2009 Washington, D.C. — The Department of Homeland Security has released a 10-page report warning against the potential of what it calls “Rightwing Extremism.” The report begins with a disclaimer: “The DHS/Office of Intelligence and Analysis (I&A) has no specific information that domestic rightwing terrorists are currently planning acts of violence, but rightwing extremists may be gaining new recruits by playing on their fears about several emerging issues.”
Dr. Janice Shaw Crouse, Director and Senior Fellow of Concerned Women for America’s Beverly LaHaye Institute, says, “The report goes on to demonize specifically those who supposedly ‘exploit’ social issues such as ‘abortion, inter-racial crimes and same-sex marriage.’ It is the worst sort of extremism for a government agency to stir up fear against those groups who hold Biblical views on social issues. It is even worse to link those views with ‘inter-racial crimes.’ What unconscionable guilt by association!”
The report also expresses “concern” about the reaction of “rightwing extremists” to the election of the first African-American president, to economic hardship and to fears that immigrants are “taking away American jobs.” The report conveys anxiety over “end times” prophecies because they “have been linked with radicalization of domestic extremist individuals.” Further, the report stirs up concerns about the “heightened level of extremist paranoia” associated with those who believe in the right to bear arms.
Crouse is appalled at the alarmist tactics and the horrible insinuations about those who hold conservative views on social issues. She says, “It would be impossible to overstate the way this report links conservative views with terrorist potential. It even threatens the utilization of law enforcement actions to curb such activities ‘in today’s climate.’ It is scary to read that the United States government is launching major efforts to ‘limit’ domestic social conservatives — that they call ‘rightwing extremists’ — at the same time that it is downplaying the threat of Islamic terrorists who have plainly stated their intent to harm our nation.”
