DHS Report Labels Conservatives as Radical Extremists     4/16/2009

A report sent from the Department of Homeland Security to local law enforcement agencies warned of a resurgence and recruitment by rightwing extremist groups. Those groups included the expected white supremacist segment, but lumped in pro-lifers, gun owners, returning military veterans, and those opposed to illegal immigration. While lumping mainstream conservatives in with domestic terrorist groups, the report lacked any evidence to support its claims. Mario Diaz, CWA's Policy Director for Legal Issues, expresses concern over this report, adding that it harkens back to the days of the Justice Department under Janet Reno which looked for a national conspiracy to harm abortion providers.
