Brazen: Sebelius Vetoes Bill to Regulate Late-Term Abortions     4/24/2009
Even as Senators hold up her nomination over her political favors for campaign contributor and late-term abortionist George Tiller

Washington, D.C. — Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius vetoed S. 218 late Thursday in a move that contradicts her attempt to convince Senators overseeing her confirmation as the Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) that she is moderate on abortion. S. 218, a common-sense bill that would prevent abortionists from terminating an almost-born infant for frivolous reasons and require more stringent reporting regarding post-viable abortions was rejected by the Governor on the grounds that doctors should not be subject to legal recourse from the women who come to them for abortions. Ironically, the “doctor” she is referring to is the infamous third-trimester abortionist George Tiller, a major campaign contributor.

“For those of us in Kansas, it is no surprise that she once again shielded the abortion industry, with which she has close ties both financially and ideologically, from common-sense regulations that protect patients,” says Judy Smith, State Director of Concerned Women for America (CWA) of Kansas. “It is tragic that a woman who claims to be for women’s rights would be so cavalier about rejecting their opportunity for legal recourse when their rights are violated by an abortionist.

“Everything she has done since her nomination is to try to hide the relationship she has with the abortion industry. This time her actions prove who she really is,” says Smith.

CWA President Wendy Wright says, “Kathleen Sebelius is so brazen in her allegiance to late-term abortionist George Tiller that she put his financial interests above patients’ well-being, even as her nomination to head up HHS is held up over her ties to him. Her deceptive answers to senators’ questions in an attempt to hide her ties to Tiller and her support of ‘comparative effectiveness,’ which would deny treatments for patients if a bureaucrat deems it unnecessary or too costly, prove that she is the wrong person to entrust with overseeing the nation’s health care system.”

CWA is urging senators to oppose Kathleen Sebelius for Secretary of Health and Human Services.
