Senate Confirms Tainted Sebelius to Head HHS     4/29/2009

Washington, D.C. — Even after revelations of Kathleen Sebelius’ tax problems and granting of political favors to a notorious late-term abortionist, the Senate voted 65-31 to place her as the Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS). Her nomination was expected to sail through but was delayed and lost support when Concerned Women for America (CWA) and others brought her serious ethical problems to the attention of senators.

“A shrewd politician who uses her position to benefit political contributors is not what America needs to head up the largest federal agency that oversees our national health system,” said Wendy Wright, President of CWA. “Sebelius has a history of opposing bills that would protect patients from unethical practices. With Kathleen Sebelius heading up HHS, Americans will have to fight to protect patients and health care providers from her attempts to empower bureaucrats with the ability to deny health care and to direct funding and political favors to her allies.”

Janice Shaw Crouse, Director and Senior Fellow of CWA’s Beverly LaHaye Institute, stated, “Sebelius squeaked by in the nomination process, but she comes into office carrying heavy baggage — with unpaid taxes and undisclosed aspects of her relationship with late-term abortionist George Tiller at the top of the heap — and having lost any credibility she might have had at the outset. Her agenda is clear, and her mandate from the President is understood: she will reverse all the pro-life and pro-abstinence progress that she can, and she’ll craft a universal health care package that will make our waiting lists for treatments competitive with Canada and England. Ultimately, the most vulnerable among us — the pre-born and the elderly — will be expendable.”
