Victory for Religious Liberty in California 5/26/2009 By CWA Staff Concerned Women for America (CWA) of California took a particular interest in the case of Farnan v. Capistrano Valley School District since the student involved in this case, Chad Farnan, is the son of Teresa Farnan, one of CWA’s Prayer/Action Chapter leaders.
Earlier this month the federal district court in Orange County ruled that Chad’s Advanced Placement European History teacher, Dr. James Corbett, had violated the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment. What makes this case remarkable is that this clause is generally invoked against religion, but in this case, the judge ruled that Dr. Corbett’s statement about creationism being “superstitious nonsense … constitutes improper disapproval of religion in violation of the Establishment Clause.”
One of the attorneys who argued this case, Robert Tyler, Chief Counsel for Advocates for Faith and Freedom, a non-profit legal organization, was one of the speakers at February’s CWA of California state conference, which focused on threats to religious liberty.
