CWALAC Objects to “Ambassador for Abortion” Bill     6/10/2009

Washington, D.C. – Hidden dangers are embedded in HR 2410, a bill before the U.S. House of Representatives for debate today. The Foreign Relations Reauthorization Act would create special protections for homosexuals and transsexuals, promote abortion, increase funding for the United Nations and legitimize treaties that the U.S. has not ratified. It would establish an ambassador-at-large and an Office of Global Women’s Issues that would push so-called “women’s rights” in other nations. As Secretary of State Clinton plainly stated in a congressional hearing “the rights of women” include “reproductive health care” and “reproductive health includes access to abortion”. Concerned Women for America Legislative Action Committee (CWALAC) will tally and expose which Congressmen vote for this reprehensible bill.

CWALAC’s President Wendy Wright stated, “There are many reasons to oppose this bill. It creates an Ambassador for Abortion. It requires State Department employees to engage in overseas advocacy to repeal laws on undefined ‘sexual orientation and gender identity’; pedophilia, violent sexual behavior and other objectionable acts are not excluded. It provides no conscience protections for Foreign Service Officers who object to participating in this advocacy. It vastly increases funding – beyond U.S. commitments – for the UN bureaucracy and UN Peacekeeping (which has been rife with ‘sex for food’ and other scandals). It gives legitimacy to the Convention on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women, a UN treaty used to pressure countries to change their laws on abortion and promote radical social policies.”

CWALAC’s Director of Legislation Shari Rendall stated, “It is extremely disappointing that this Administration and Congress which claim to be bipartisan persist in being solidly partisan. Every attempt to fix this bill was shot down on party line votes, including amendments by Representative Mike Pence to ensure that all people are protected against violence and Representative Chris Smith to explicitly prohibit the Office of Global Women’s Issues from engaging in abortion activity.”

Dr. Janice Shaw Crouse, Director and Senior Fellow of CWA’s Beverly LaHaye Institute, said, “It’s bad enough that the left is pushing abortion rights here in our own nation, but it is surely the worst example of “colonialism” for the United States to foist its abortion rights agenda onto the rest of the world, regardless of their values and cultural traditions.”

CWALAC urges its constituency to tell their Congressional Representatives to reject HR 2410.
