CWA of Washington Conference 2009     7/4/2009
Standing in the Gap in Washington State
By Maureen Richardson

Concerned Women for America of Washington’s May 30, 2009, conference, “Standing in the Gap in Washington State”, drew over one hundred concerned citizens from around the state and was, by all reports, a very successful event. In an ultra-liberal state such as Washington, Christians have a wonderful opportunity to bring light and salt into the public policy arena by promoting and protecting Biblical principles. Already God’s warriors, the six speakers chosen for the conference have a history of standing in the gap of the crumbling cultural and spiritual wall in an effort to defend our Judeo-Christian heritage and put families first. Each speaker shared an area of expertise, encouraging and equipping the attendees to join them, standing in the gap (Ezekiel 22:30) until our Lord’s return (Luke 19:13). Since God has already provided the spiritual armor (Ephesians 6:11-17), we have only to put on that armor which is intended to protect our front sides in advance, not in retreat. If we will properly educate ourselves on Biblical principles and their relationship to current events, we can influence the culture and see a reversal of the spiritual and moral decay we have witnessed for the past generation.

CWA President Wendy Wright explained why we must be involved in the public policy arena now more than ever, making us aware of past examples of Christian activism and encouraging us not to give in to those who would judge us for trying to keep our country free. Representative Matt Shea educated us on the growing threats to our religious liberty from politically correct legislation which is not based on constitutional, much less Biblical, principles. Pastor Ken Hutcherson exhorted us to be courageous and influence others in the body of Christ, bringing them alongside in the spiritual and cultural battle, standing firm on God’s Word, because “I would rather be with God against man than with man against God,” and "If the church does not stand in our society for what is right and wrong according to the Bible, then who will?" These three speakers then sat on a panel to discuss the ideal relationship between the church, government and para-church organizations and also answered questions from the audience.

In the afternoon, Dr. Sharon Quick’s address was titled “Worldview with a Mission”, during which she discussed CWA issues i.e. sanctity of life, definition of the family and freedom of conscience in relationship to the worldview conflict in which we are engaged. Citizen activist Sharon Hanek rallied the group by explaining why she became an Esther in our time and how we can all stand up for God’s worldview in the current culture no matter what label the world assigns to us. State Senator Val Stevens discussed “The Danger of Knowledge without Wisdom”, the cycle of civilizations, and why we citizens should be more cautious and knowledgeable when choosing our leaders. Wendy Wright wrapped up the day by reminding us that “The Baton is in Our Hands” and that we must finish the race well for the Lord’s sake.

Throughout the day we were blessed by the music of Triiiune with worshipful and energizing songs, finishing with a rousing medley of patriotic American songs which reminded us that a belief in God has always played a primary role in our nation’s history. From the founding through modern days, our prayer has been “America, America, God shed His grace on Thee, and crown thy good with brotherhood from sea to shining sea!”

Our prayer throughout the planning process for this conference was that the event would honor and glorify God and that He would call those believers who would truly be willing to stand in the gap, occupying until the Lord’s return, equipping themselves for the cultural battles we must fight and being encouraged by fellowship and worship that we do not stand alone: God answered those prayers for which we are so thankful. We are praying now that much fruit will result from this conference. Please join us as we continue to stand in the gap in Washington State - director@washington.cwfa.org or http://wa.cwaf.org.
