A group of dedicated pro-life citizens with Texas Families, a consortium of pro-life groups which includes Concerned Women for America (CWA) of Texas, presented testimony at the Houston City Council meeting on July 21. The speakers asked the Council to pass an ordinance requiring abortion providers to follow the informed consent law that was passed by the Texas legislature in 2003. According to that law, each woman considering an abortion must be given certain information about the procedure and its possible consequences. However, abortion providers are skirting the law and causing untold grief to uninformed women.
Texas Families' goal is to work with responsible city leaders who will adopt the proposed ordinance so that informed consent can be enforced and the women of Houston can be truly protected. They are also actively seeking an end to the expansion of Houston Planned Parenthood in a renovated bank building on IH 45 North.
According to Beverly Uhlmer Roberts, CWA of Texas' Legislative Liaison, "We have written to each of the contractors asking that they stop work on the building, and there is a prayer vigil held weekly at the construction site or at the office of one of the contractors.
"We are especially concerned about a looming mental health crisis with the proposed expanded facility of Planned Parenthood that is being built. We know the devastation that can result from hastily solving the problem of an unplanned pregnancy by destroying the unborn child with little or no understanding of the long-term effects of that decision."
According to Roberts, "The abortion center will be located near three lower-income communities and the main campus of the University of Houston, making it all too easy to prey upon women with few resources and sell abortion as an easy solution with no consequences."
