By Maureen Richardson

Dear CWA of Washington Members and Friends,

REFERENDUM 71 is on the November 3 statewide ballot thanks to a lot of hard work by churches and grassroots volunteers like you! The reason R-71 was filed is that our state legislature passed a bill (SB 5688) that is the equivalent of same-sex marriage and is intended to usher in full-scale same-sex marriage to our state either through legislative action or a court challenge to the state Defense of Marriage Act. R-71 gives the voters of the state the opportunity to REJECT SB 5688, the “everything but marriage” bill.

Homosexual activists continue to claim that SB 5688 is not about marriage, but their own leadership says otherwise. State Senator Ed Murray, when announcing the first “Domestic Partnership” bill said, “The goal is marriage equality. It’s an important statement that our eyes are on the prize, and the prize is marriage.” (Seattle Times, 1-10-07) State Representative Jamie Pederson, sponsor of the House bill, told the Seattle Times that SB 5688 will give homosexuals, “a bridge until they can legally marry.” (Seattle Times, 1-28-09) If we do not vote REJECT on R-71 against SB 5688, public schools will have to teach children that homosexual unions are normal, churches will come under attack for their Biblical defense of marriage between one man and one woman and more children will be at risk, deprived of the balance of a mother and a father in their homes even though there are thousands of social science studies that show negative outcomes for children who lack the male-female balance in their personal lives.

Our opposition to expanding marital rights, responsibilities and benefits to same-sex couples is not about hatred or bigotry. It is an honest attempt to represent human and religious tradition and the view of the majority of Americans who are opposed to homosexual marriage. Unmarried couples over 62 were included in SB 5688 only to garner their support, although they are able to achieve like results from a simple power of attorney. In addition, the financial burden of this bill has not yet been calculated. Think about the increased expense to government and business when they are required to extend benefits to domestic partners. Budgets are already stretched to the breaking point; what will this additional burden do to our state’s economy? Who might lose their jobs so that domestic partners can receive benefits? Are those benefits more important than those jobs?

You may find more information on this campaign, and read, copy and distribute the R-71 flyer directly from the campaign’s website: www.protectmarriagewa.com The time is urgent! Please do all you can do to support this campaign. “Faith by itself, if not accompanied by action, is dead.” (James 2:17)

And first of all, PRAY! “The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.” (James 5:16)

REMEMBER: REFERENDUM 71: REJECT SB 5688 in order to preserve marriage between one man and one woman and to protect children. We are not denying anyone’s right. We are rejecting their attempt to redefine marriage, a familial relationship that has existed since the beginning of time.

In His Service,

Maureen Richardson
