The top concern for Mainers in recent days can be found right on the front of Tuesday’s ballot—“Question #1” is the name given to the Marriage Referendum that seeks to restore marriage from the damage done by Governor Baldacci’s signed legislation six months ago.
It was an unthinkable task to challenge the Governor’s clear agenda; however, Maine stepped up to the challenge. Concerned Women for America’s (CWA) of Maine Area Director, Penny Morrell, knew that the true battle would take place as the people of God got on their knees.
A few days ago (October 24), Morrell attended a prayer event organized by The Call in Augusta, Maine. Lou Engle, founder of The Call, has been leading prayer vigils across the country. He stated, “Recently again, I have been challenged by the Lord in a profound way to raise up a wall of intercession to hold back the encroaching ideology. Ezekiel 22:30 says, ‘I looked for a man who would build up a wall, and stand in the gap before me’. I have started to pray out of this scripture that God would begin to raise up a stonewall of intercession. Forty years after the stonewall riots, that many point to as the beginning of the homosexual revolution in America, we are calling for a spiritual stonewall to be raised up all across the nation. I’ve been asking God, “How do we build this stonewall? Recently, I was asked by national Christian leaders and pro-family leaders in Maine to call the whole state of Maine and all of New England to fast and pray for 21 days starting tomorrow October 14 through November 4th, election day.
In describing the event, Penny said, “I attended the Lou Engle prayer event for Question #1 yesterday at the Augusta Civic Center. There were over 200 people packed in that room including many young people crying out to the Lord for Maine. We also remembered our sister state Washington and the city of Washington, DC who are in the battle as well. The event started at 1:00 pm and was still going strong at 3:30 when Lou had to leave to go to Portland for his next event. What a blessing it was to pray together and be excited about what we know God is doing in Maine to restore us to Himself individually and corporately as a state in our nation.”
Mainers responded powerfully by delivering over 55,000 signatures in September, communicating their dissatisfaction with the law that would legalize same-sex unions and coerce both individuals and religious groups to perform the ceremonies—all under the name “marriage”.
The collected signatures met the requirement for a people’s veto, which placed ‘marriage’ on the ballot for November 3. Last Tuesday the people of Maine came out in record numbers to declare that marriage is between one man and one woman- the vote for “Question 1” passed with no allocations for same-sex benefits or partnerships to be included under the same title.
This battle has been won, but Maine realizes their victory will not go unchallenged. They will continue to fight this battle on their knees across the state.
