Victims of Pornography—Statement by Wendy Wright, CWA     1/1/2002

Pornography: Oftentimes it is called a “victimless crime.” Yet a trail of broken marriages, innocent spouses abused emotionally and physically, rape victims, and financially devastated families, tells us there are victims.

The statistics are daunting:

  • The average age of a child's first exposure to hard-core pornography is 8 years old.
  • 75 percent of convicted rapists admit they were acting out what they had seen in pornography.
  • 80 percent of child molesters admit their spiral down began with pornography.

We are here to expose how pervasive and damaging pornography is to individuals and to our society.

Who are the victims? They are the men, whose fantasies become addictions. They are the women and children whose bodies are used like disposable items. They are the daughters who are taught that the only way they can be loved is through seduction and sex. They are the families whose security and self-esteem are destroyed because one member cannot see the dignity and uniqueness in a person, but rather sees people as objects. It's our society, which pays the price in increased crime.

God created sexuality, and created men, particularly, to be visual beings. But sexual desire—which is created by God—has been perverted by man.

Today we'll hear from victims and their advocates—the people who are raising awareness of the dangers of pornography and helping those caught in the web of deceit to become free.
