CWA's Stand on Biotechnology     4/15/2003

We desperately need a moral compass to direct our exploration of biotechnology.

"If we allow a human cloning system to move forward, we're creating a person …"
— Senator Sam Brownback (R-Kansas), a sponsor of legislation that outlaws all forms of cloning.

CWA believes that ultimately, it is the most vulnerable — women and children — who will be used to benefit the powerful, the wealthy, the more politically connected. We urge you to read more on this pressing topic:

  • CWA's Press Release:
    CWA Signs Biotechnology Manifesto

"For the sake of humanity, science must be reined in by ethics and by law," said CWA President Sandy Rios. "Ultimately, it is the most vulnerable who will be used to benefit the powerful."
  • CWA's News Flash:
Manifesto Calls on Ethics and Law to Rein-In Biotechnology

The controversy of life's sanctity versus its utility was starkly illustrated on February 5th, with dueling press conferences on the issue of cloning.
  • The Manifesto:
The Sanctity of Life in a Brave New World: A Manifesto on Biotechnology and Human Dignity

This document — signed by CWA President Sandy Rios, along with Charles Colson of Prison Fellowship, James Dobson of Focus on the Family, Joni Eareckson Tada of Joni and Friends, and others — outlines a basic moral framework for decision-making in the emerging field of bioethics.

If you would like to sign the manifesto, click here and scroll to the "Biotech Manifesto Signature Form" section at the end of the document.
