Gutter Politics
Many of you have heard me give my Christian testimony. In it, I talk about a time in my life when I thought I was man enough to have sex outside of marriage but wasn't man enough to deal with the consequences. My sinful and cowardly actions led me to a Planned Parenthood clinic in Sioux Falls where I brought an ex-girlfriend to have an abortion.
Thankfully, God sent His Son to die for my sins. I've since turned my life over to Christ and now encourage others in my position to choose life instead of death. God has blessed me with many opportunities to take my horrible experience and use it for good.
However, Sen. Tom Daschle is bringing the politics of personal destruction to a new low. He announced that he is going to use a videotape [that appears to have been taken] from one of my public appearances in which I shared my testimony--to try to embarrass me. His campaign manager, Steve Hildebrand, told a Washington Post reporter this past weekend that Sen. Daschle will spend "a lot of time attacking" conservative figures like me. Hildebrand also told The Post that Daschle "has assembled embarrassing information on several conservative activists," including "a videotape of a conservative activist discussing how he paid for his girlfriend's abortion."
[If this is indeed a videotape of my salvation story,] it is utterly disgusting that Sen. Daschle would take my Christian testimony and spin it for his own political gain. The Lord only knows how he plans on using this videotape. I wish he'd hand it out to all his friends at Planned Parenthood and NARAL [NARAL: Pro-Choice America, formerly National Abortion Rights Action League]. They could stand to hear a good defense of the right to life.
Yet, when we ask Sen. Daschle to explain his support for abortion, he counters with personal attacks. When we challenge his push for special rights for homosexuals, he threatens with character assassination. When we question his continual obstruction of judicial nominations, he slings mud. He can't defend his liberal record. All he can do is attack the messenger.
It's curious that Sen. Daschle apparently thinks my Christian witness is embarrassing. I wonder if he thinks it's embarrassing that he appropriated taxpayer dollars to help Planned Parenthood perform that abortion, as well as millions more during his time in Congress.
Friends, we need to stand united, now more than ever. Liberals in the media and politics have ratcheted up their attacks on the Family Policy Council. Daschle's allies have pledged to raise millions of dollars to distort and distract the truth about his liberal record. And the Council is their first target. Gutter politics is their weapon. The truth is ours. Please keep us in your prayers. And keep fighting for the truth.
