An Urgent Invitation to Protect Marriage 1/27/2004 January 23, 2004
Re: Urgent Invitation to Protect Marriage
Dear Valued CWA Member,
This is not a fundraising appeal, but an urgent call to action. I want to invite you to a critical and extraordinary event as we try to turn back judicial tyranny and save marriage in Massachusetts. On Wednesday, February 4, the members and friends of Concerned Women for America will be descending on Beacon Hill for Protect Marriage Day.
We will meet at 10:00 a.m. in the Hearing Room B-1 in the basement at the State Capitol. Please join Sandi Martinez, our Massachusetts state director, and me with your friends to learn how to lobby this issue from Robert Knight, director of our Culture & Family Institute. This special event will train and equip you and your friends how to articulate this critical issue and to help you lobby your elected officials. I also urge you to tune your radio to WVNE Worcester 760 AM at 2 p.m. on weekdays to listen to my daily Concerned Women Today radio show for updates and news on this battle.
It was 231 years ago when your fellow citizens rose up at the Boston Tea Party against King George under the slogan: "No taxation without representation." Now another defining moment for America is taking shape in Massachusetts.
On November 18, 2003, the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court ruled 4-3 that limiting marriage to opposite-sex couples violates the Massachusetts Constitution. It is in fact the Court's ruling that violates the Constitution—and nearly every facet of science, public health, politics, culture and religious values.
The court's opinion is a clear example of judicial tyranny—demanding that the Legislature act while ignoring the written state Constitution—so the justices can take action into their own hands. Marriage has been upheld and protected by the courts since the founding of our nation. These justices have rejected nearly 400 years of Massachusetts law in order to force their will on the people.
Let me assure you that we at CWA are doing all we can to assist your state leaders in passing the Massachusetts Constitutional Amendment to Protect Marriage. This vital piece of legislation is known as the Marriage Affirmation and Protection Amendment (MA & PA). And we need your help. We also need the help of those you know in Massachusetts who will stand up and be counted!
It grieves me to think that so few of us did or knew what we could have done in 1973 to prevent Roe v. Wade from imposing abortion on the law of the land. If you had the ability to influence that decision, would you not have done all you could to save the life of the unborn?
Together we now have the opportunity to undo the court's ruling with a constitutional amendment that defines marriage as one man and one woman. Will you stand to save marriage in America? Will you stand up to judicial tyranny and demand that your own state Legislature make the laws and not be a rubber stamp for the will of four unelected justices?
Please take a few moments and read the following short policy papers The Real Costs of 'Gay Marriage' and Civil Unions, and Why Goodridge Is Legally and Constitutionally Wrong. Look at the action card and what needs to be done. The need is great but the stakes are even higher. Maybe you can do several of the action items. I want to encourage you, however, to do at least the following two:
- Attend Protect Marriage Day at Beacon Hill on February 4 in Hearing Room B-1 of the State Capitol at 10:00 a.m.;
I will look forward to meeting each and every one of you as we join you in this fight.
- Call your state legislators; urge them not to delay a vote and to support the Marriage Affirmation and Protection Amendment (MA & PA)!
Tell them to also oppose gay marriage and civil unions in any form.
We need to fill the halls of the Capitol with citizens lobbying to protect marriage. The old political adage still rings true. When politicians feel the heat, they see the light. When legislators know the people of Massachusetts are watching, they will listen to you. Just ask former Gov. Gray Davis of California after he lied and drove that state into near bankruptcy. His recall was the power of citizens unleashed. This is why I will be in Boston on February 4, 2003. Please join me.
Enclosed are some excellent resources to equip you in this battle, and I encourage you to check out additional information and updates on our Web site at www.cwfa.org. Please fill out the action card and return the bottom half to us in the enclosed envelope. Keep the top as your personal reminder.
I believe that prayer is something we are called to do as a way of life. When you read the Scriptures, I think you will be impressed that every miracle, every blessing, required faith to be put into action. God parted the Red Sea, but He used Moses to demonstrate His power. Why? Because our Heavenly Father calls His people to act in obedience to His will, not to be bystanders. I pray that God will use each of us to glorify Him and bring a miraculous result to protect marriage.
Sincerely,
The National Staff Concerned Women for America
P.S. Call your State Senator and State Representative today! If you have any questions, contact CWA of Massachusetts at director@massachusetts.cwfa.org or at (978) 256-7943.
Hope to see you and your friends at Protect Marriage Day!
