Marriage in Massachusetts Needs Your Help     3/10/2004

Legislators there need to know that America is watching.

As you know, the people of Massachusetts are in an intense battle over same-sex marriage. Sandi Martinez, CWA's state director in Massachusetts, is asking for your help in her state.

Here's a summary: The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court suddenly discovered recently that the state constitution requires homosexual marriage and there is no "rational basis" to object. It is an outrage.

The state legislature met as a constitutional convention to resolve this issue last February 11 and never got the job done. They meet again this Thursday, March 11. The convention needs to vote on the Marriage Affirmation and Protection Amendment (MA & PA) by Rep. Phil Travis. (The bill number is H3190). The amendment protects marriage and prevents homosexual activists from adding so-called civil unions to the state constitution. Legislators need to hear from the voters of Massachusetts AND from you no matter where you are. This vote is important to everyone in every state.

Here is what you can do:

  • If you have friends or family in Massachusetts, contact them immediately and urge them to take the Action Steps below. Naturally, Massachusetts legislators care most what their own citizens think.
  • Take a moment yourself to take the Action Steps below. Massachusetts legislators need to know that America is watching; what they do could affect your state.

ACTION STEPS:

  • Please call Massachusetts Senate President Robert Travaglini and tell him we want a vote -- no delays -- on the original MA & PA (H3190) with no civil unions. No substitutes, no delays, no adjournment without a vote. Remind him that this will be a big election issue this fall. Also, ask him to start the process to remove the four rogue judges who created this whole mess!

Telephone number: 617-722-1500 or e-mail him at RTravagl@senate.state.ma.us

  • Contact Speaker of the Massachusetts House Thomas Finneran and thank him for his support for MA & PA (H3190). Remind him that we do not want civil unions, nor do we want any compromise bills. We want the original MA & PA (H3190) voted on during the March 11 Constitutional Convention. Ask him, as well, to start the process to remove the four rogue judges.

    Telephone number: 617-722-2500

  • Call Gov. Mitt Romney, thank him for his position to date, and urge him to become more visible in his support of traditional marriage. He can show leadership by taking a strong stand, as have Rep. Phil Travis and Speaker Finneran. He must do all in his power to challenge the ruling by the rogue judiciary and not allow same-sex marriages to take place under any circumstances on May 17, as the court wrongly demands. He can use his power to issue an executive order telling the Department of Health NOT to issue marriage licenses to homosexual couples. Also, ask him to start the process to remove the four rogue judges.
  • If you live in Massachusetts, ask the same as above of your state representative and senator. Click here to obtain contact information.

We need to flood the legislators this week. LET THE PEOPLE VOTE and REMOVE THE JUDGES!
