CWA Calls on Massachusetts to End Faux Marriage Farce 5/17/2004 Washington, D.C. – Concerned Women for America (CWA) called on Massachusetts’s citizens today to take heart and to continue to work to uphold real marriage.
“The right of the people to govern themselves has been usurped by the courts,” said Robert Knight, director of CWA’s Culture and Family Institute. “The rest of America is counting on the citizens of Massachusetts to lead the way to restoring the moral order and self-government. Their leaders are AWOL.”
“The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court has legislated from the bench,” Knight said. “But Governor Mitt Romney and the Legislature have failed to act decisively to protect marriage and to ensure that the people have a voice.”
Other states are working to protect their citizens from this act of judicial tyranny. Thirty-nine states have enacted Defense of Marriage laws, and several will be deciding on constitutional amendments in November.
“Homosexual activists will be saying over and over this week, “See, ‘gay’ couples were ‘married,’ and the sky didn’t fall.”’ But this is deceptive. We know that social change happens over time. It took a generation for inner city families to fall apart after the government began issuing welfare checks to unwed mothers. Likewise, creating counterfeit marriage will damage the real thing and put more children at risk. Only a callous, self-absorbed culture would create legal incentives to engage in immoral, destructive behavior with children as the guinea pigs. America must be better than that.”
