Marriage Alert: Louisiana Voters Prepare for Vote on Marriage Amendment     9/2/2004

Washington, D.C. – Concerned Women for America (CWA) is rallying the forces in Louisiana to prepare to vote September 18 on a constitutional amendment to limit marriage to a man and a woman and prohibit civil unions.

Despite three lawsuits filed by homosexual activists to block the amendment from the September 18 ballot, the amendment remains on schedule. An appellate court overturned a lower court’s ruling that the amendment is unconstitutional because it involves more than one issue. Unless the Louisiana Supreme Court reverses the appellate court, Louisiana voters will have the same chance to protect marriage that Missourians had when they approved an amendment to their constitution by 71 percent in August.

“These baseless lawsuits are further proof that homosexuals know they can’t win through the legislative process,” said Jan LaRue, CWA’s chief counsel. “They want judicial tyrants to deny the right of the people or their elected representatives to decide the issue.”

“We will not be deterred by ‘gay’ activists who want to silence the truth that God intended marriage to exist between one man and one woman,” said Deborah Young, CWA’s Louisiana State Director who leads CWA’s 4,207 Louisiana members. “The people of Louisiana are strongly committed and eager to show their support for marriage on September 18.”

“‘Gay’ marriage and civil unions are one and the same issue,” said Robert Knight, director of CWA’s Culture & Family Institute. “Both threaten the real thing, and both impose by law a counterfeit version of marriage on every institution in society, from businesses to the Boy Scouts.”
