CWA Condemns FDA’s Nod at RU-486 Deaths 11/16/2004 Washington, D.C. – Concerned Women for America (CWA) urges the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to adequately respond to the fact that several women have died after taking RU-486 – and pull its approval of this dangerous drug.
“It is reported that another woman has died after taking the abortion drug RU-486, and the FDA’s response is to change the drug’s label,” said Wendy Wright, senior policy director.
“This is a dangerous drug that deserves to be pulled off the market immediately. Not only is the drug unsafe, but abortionists refuse to follow the FDA’s current guidelines – even after Holly Patterson’s tragic death.
“Why would anyone think that by the FDA changing words on a label, abortionists will suddenly put women’s health and lives above their own convenience and profits? How many more women must die before the FDA acknowledges the perilous realities of this drug and removes it from the market?” added Wright.
“When Holly Patterson died in September 2003 from using RU-486, after Concerned Women for America had filed extensive evidence with the FDA showing the drug was not adequately tested, that the trials under-reported serious complications, and that abortionists were not following the FDA’s requirements in administering it, the FDA did not respond. But now, the FDA has resorted to merely changing the label information.
“When women’s lives are at stake, this is unacceptable. While the label changes implicitly admit the dangerous nature of the drug, trusting abortionists to follow the warnings is a futile effort and does nothing to make the drug itself safe.”
Concerned Women for America (CWA) filed a Citizen Petition with the FDA documenting the FDA’s violations in its approval of RU-486, and how abortion clinics routinely and flagrantly flout the FDA’s restrictions on administering the drug, increasing the risk to women.
