Specter Watch: CWA Rallies for Trustworthy Judiciary Committee Chairman     11/16/2004

Washington, D.C. – Concerned Women for America (CWA) will join a rally today to oppose Sen. Arlen Specter (R-Pennsylvania) from becoming the next chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee. The rally will take place at 1:00 p.m. in front of the Dirksen Senate building (1st and Constitution N.E.).

“Allowing Arlen Specter to become chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee makes as much sense as Michael Moore becoming chairman of the RNC,” said Jan LaRue, CWA’s chief counsel, who will speak at the rally.

Specter is fighting hard to gain what would have been a shoe-in had it not been for his November 3 statement, which has been widely perceived as a warning to President Bush against sending any pro-life judicial nominees to the Judiciary Committee.

While seniority is generally the rule for naming chairmen of Senate committees, the Republican Conference rules state that chairmen don’t necessarily have to be members with the most seniority.

“Specter is undergoing a ‘confirmation conversion’ that is suspect, to say the least. His recent commitment to help the president with his nominees is coming from a man with a record for saying whatever it takes to get whatever he wants and then betraying those who trusted and supported him,” LaRue added.

“This chairmanship is absolutely vital and must be held by someone with a track record to back his commitments. Specter betrayed President Reagan and he can be expected to betray President Bush,” LaRue concluded.
