CWA Says, It’s Time to Tell Democrats ‘Hit the Road, Jack’ 5/16/2005 Washington, D.C. – Concerned Women for America (CWA) urged the U.S. Senate to hurry up and finish on the highway bill, so that it can hit the road on the President’s judicial nominees. In a statement from Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist’s (R-Tennessee) office on Friday, the Majority Leader vowed to send Priscilla Owen and Janice Rogers Brown to the Senate floor for debate and an up-or-down vote as soon as the Senate completes work on the highway bill.
“We wholeheartedly support Sen. Frist’s commitment to give these well-qualified nominees an up-or-down vote – a courtesy they’ve long been waiting for and deserve,” said Jan LaRue, CWA’s chief counsel. “Sen. Frist needs to bring up the nominees and move full-speed ahead – no picking up hitchhiking-compromisers, no detours, no sightseeing, no back-seat filibustering. If the Senate Democrats resume their obstructionist filibustering in order to prevent an up-or-down vote, Sen. Frist should apply the constitutional option without tapping the brakes.
“Reasonable time for debate should not be turned into a filibuster roadblock that would require 60 votes for confirmation rather than the 51 votes it has always taken to confirm a nominee,” LaRue concluded.
