Broadcast Indecency Tied to Big Media 9/20/2005 A new study has found a link between the increase in broadcast indecency and the rapid growth of large media mega-corporations. The study conducted by the Center for Creative Voices in Media and Fordham University found that 96 percent of all indecency fines levied by the Federal Communications Commission from 2000 to 2003 were against the nation’s largest ownership groups; Clear Channel, Viacom, Entercom and Emmis. That fine rate is nearly double their 48.6 percent share of the national radio audience. Meanwhile, the 11,750 radio station not owned by those four station groups which represent 51.4 percent of the national audience was responsible for 4 percent of the indecency violations during that same period. These findings underscore why CWA is advocating for passage of the Broadcast Decency Enforcement Act, a bill that would raise the fines for broadcast indecency, so that the fines can keep pace with the size of the violating companies.
