CWA’s Crouse says, “Golden Globes Goes Political”     1/17/2006

Washington, D.C. – Concerned Women for America (CWA) says that by winning four awards, Brokeback Mountain was the clear victor at last night’s Golden Globes award ceremony. About male homosexual sheepherders who hide their affair for decades, the movie has garnered critical accolades with limited showings in selected theatres, while a massive public relations campaign paves the way for more mainstream success – and, seemingly more important, spreading acceptance of homosexuality.

Other nontraditional movies also captured awards: Felicity Huffman, a star in the television series Desperate Housewives, won best actress for her role as a male who undergoes a sex change operation in the movie Transamerica. Philip Seymour Hoffman won best actor for his portrayal of homosexual Truman Capote, author of Breakfast at Tiffany’s, in the movie Capote.

Dr. Janice Shaw Crouse, CWA’s Senior Fellow of the Beverly LaHaye Institute, said, “Once again, the media elites are proving that their pet projects are more important than profit.”

Crouse added that “none of the three movies, Capote, Transamerica or Brokeback Mountain, is a box office hit. Brokeback Mountain has barely topped $25 million in ticket sales. While it has recouped all the production costs, it is doubtful that receipts have covered the massive PR costs.”

Crouse concluded, “If America isn’t watching these films, why are they winning the awards?”

Except for Walk the Line and Grey’s Anatomy, award winners last night were decidedly leftist in ideology: Mary Louise Parker (who sells pot to pay the bills in the movie Weeds) won best performance by an actress in a television series, musical or comedy, George Clooney was awarded best supporting actor for his role in Syriana, and Desperate Housewives won for best television series, musical or comedy.
