PRESS RELEASE

Common Core Resolution to be Introduced in the Senate

WASHINGTON, D.C. –– Senator Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina) is set to introduce a resolution that would shed light on the federal takeover of education through the Common Core State Standards Initiative. In support of the resolution, Penny Nance, CEO & President of Concerned Women for America Legislative Action Committee, commented:

“Forty-five states and the District of Columbia have adopted the Common Core standards for math and English from K-12 grade. The Common Core is part of a coercion effort, started by private corporations, to implement national standards and testing which will lead to a national curriculum. The federal government has incentivized states to adopt these standards through funds, waivers, etc.

“Besides doing away with local accountability and parental input, Common Core dumbs down schools by setting kids up to fail, teaching math in an untested way. Early assessment tests in states that are implementing Common Core show poor results. For example, 70 percent of third to eighth grade students failed the math test in New York, which implemented Common Core early on.1 Children’s performance is suffering and parents have no say in the matter.

“Yet again, we see another attempt to weaken the power of the states by a federal power grab. Look to the experts, those who actually teach and know our nations’ kids; three-hundred prominent educators and policymakers warn about Common Core discouraging innovation.”2

CWA’s think tank, the Beverly LaHaye Institute (BLI), directed by Dr. Janice Shaw Crouse, had this to say:

“Common Core is doing for education what ObamaCare is doing for health care.”
