Embryonic Stem Cell Research Bill Resurfaces on Capitol Hill

Although President Bush vetoed a bill that would have provided federal funding for destructive embryonic stem cell research (ESCR), the bill's original sponsors have crafted new legislation with an additional component - an ethical oversight board at the National Institutes of Health - in hopes of persuading key lawmakers to change their votes. Given that the original bill fell just shy of enough support to override the President's veto, it's vital that your representatives in Washington, D.C. know the truth about ESCR as well as the reasons this ethics component is dangerous and ineffective. CWA Policy Analyst Martha Kleder spoke with Maria Lancaster, Executive Director of Embryo Donation & Adoption Services of Cedar Park. She introduces us to Theresa Deisher, Ph.D., Founder and Research Director of AVM Biotechnology and Gayle Romero, the firm's Senior VP of Strategic Alliances. Through AVM Biotechnology Deisher is not only advancing the use of adult stem cells in the treatment of heart disease, but has also launched a companion non-profit organization seeking to educate the public, medical professionals and lawmakers about the promise and ever-growing uses of adult stem cells in the treatment of disease and regenerative medicine. Her 17 years of experience include work with the nation's largest biotechnology firms including Genentech, Repligen, ZymoGenetics, Immunex and Amgen. Her experience includes lab as well as clinical research where she has had contact with patients benefiting from adult stem cell therapies.

AVM Biotechnology LLC (AVM Biotech) offers a positive, ethical, and effective alternative to the moral hazards pervasive in the fields of biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and vaccine development. The use of aborted fetal tissue and embryonic cells in the discovery, development, and production of vaccines and pharmaceuticals has increased dramatically in the past decade. Without a positive alternative, obtaining new medication or vaccinations which are ethically untainted will be difficult, if not impossible. By developing moral alternatives to unethical practices, AVM Biotech seeks to relieve parents, families, medical professionals, hospitals, and health care organizations from having to choose between the health of a loved one or patient and the forced participation in a morally objectionable treatment. Our products reflect a profound respect for human life from its beginning until its natural conclusion. AVM Biotech certifies that its therapeutic products are not discovered, screened, evaluated, produced, or tainted in any way by the use of directly aborted human fetal material, human embryonic material, or any other unethically obtained materials.
