Talking to Doorposts

If talking to some young people leaves you feeling as if you had just been talking to a doorpost, the problem could be their limited vocabulary. A recent linguistics study showed that today's teens use only about 800 words in the course of normal conversation and the average vocabulary of today's teen is less than half that of a teen from the 1950's. As Dr. Janice Crouse, Senior Fellow and Director of the Beverly LaHaye Institute, notes that while the decline can be traced to overexposure of television and computer-speak, its impact is being felt in the discourse of a wide variety of subjects, including business, philosophy, religion, public policy, and nature.
